SERVICES
Our Services
- We offer a range of psychological assessment and treatment services for adults, couples/partners, and families.
- Typical presenting problems that we treat include depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder, difficulties coping with stress, difficulties coping with a medical illness (including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, physical accident), personality difficulties, marital or relationship problems, maladaptive behavioral habits (impulsivity, anger), and child behavior problems.
- We also offer consultation services to other mental health professionals (clinical supervision) and researchers (research consultation), as well as provide local and national workshops and academic presentations on a variety of topics (lfollow the link to "For Professionals" page).
- We represent close to 50 years of combined experience providing cognitive-behavioral-based assessment and treatment for specialized patient groups, including individuals with developmental disabilities and behavior disorders, stress-related medical problems (hypertension, heart failure, pain, immune disorders, cancer, insomnia), and people in need of effective parent training skills or anger management.
Our Philosophy: Every Person is Unique
- We believe that in order to best help people overcome their difficulties and reach their life goals, it is important to employ therapy strategies and techniques that have been demonstrated, via scientific studies, to be effective. Your life is valuable and your concerns are important; that is why we approach them with a blending of a scientific perspective and a caring and committed attitude. We initially take a session or two to get to know you as an individual. Everybody is different and it is demeaning to treat you as a "diagnosis." Based upon a careful assessment of your individual concerns, background, and current life circumstances, we attempt to develop an overall course of psychological treatment that is shared and discussed with you.
- We wish to know and understand you as "a whole person." Therefore, we take into account your unique history, concerns, spiritual beliefs, values, and cultural background in helping to decide how best to help you. Overall, our therapeutic approach is very collaborative, engaging, and present-focused. We frequently teach people various skills to apply outside of the therapist office to better cope with life's problems and to reach valued goals, as well as foster improved ability to make decisions.
- Last, whereas we highly value positive treatment outcome (for example, decreasing depression, overcoming a phobia, improving interpersonal and family relationships), we also believe the journey to reaching such goals is an important process.
